The suspension of artisanal gold mining and the radio silence of the National Union of Gold Miners of Guinea constitute, for the gold miners of Siguiri, a difficult pill to swallow.

Located more than 500 kilometers from the capital, this prefecture is recognized as the first and largest gold zone in the country, because of its immense gold potential, since the dawn of time.

Even if on paper, it is noted that the main activity of the region is agriculture. In the 20 sub-prefectures of Siguiri, it is indisputable that the communities are rushing for gold, in artisanal mines. In addition, there are more than 100 mining companies that operate with exploitation and exploration permits.

Sometimes, the mines of these mining companies are even invaded by artisanal miners.

In a joint press release, made public on Sunday, May 26, 2024, in the RTG newspaper, the Ministers of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Environment and Mines and Geology, announced the suspension of artisanal gold and diamond mining throughout the national territory.

According to the signatories, this measure, which came into force on June 1, 2024, until further notice, is part of meeting the needs of the current agricultural campaign, ecological restoration and limiting the risks of landslides during the rainy season.
